Project Description
Overview
Originally designed and built in the early 1920’s, Cedar Crest was purchased by the City of Dallas in 1946. It was the site of the 1927 PGA Championship, which was the first “Major” championship held in the southern United States. The original golf course architect, A.W. Tillinghast, utilized the rolling terrain to create a wonderful routing that has stood the test of time. Weibring-Wolfard Golf Design was hired to restore the original features of the Tillinghast design to the greatest extent possible while also updating the golf course features to today’s standards. A substantial amount of research was required to accomplish the goal of a “classic restoration” versus a renovation. The restoration of Cedar Crest included the construction of a lake to store reclaimed irrigation water; a state of the art irrigation system; addition of a golf practice range, some fairway grading, drainage improvements and renovation of tee, green and sand bunker features. Cedar Crest’s fairways, greens and tees were also re-grassed with modern hybrid Bermuda turf.
