Pecan Hollow

Pecan Hollow was a 40 year old Don January design in Plano, Texas that is owned and operated by the city. The property is located at the junction of Rowlett and Cottonwood Creek, with over 90% of the golf course built in the floodplain. Due to extensive development upstream, the flooding frequency and intensity has increased over time, especially within the last decade. The attraction to golfers had dwindled to its affordability and the fact that it was a core golf course with 6-8 pretty good tree lined golf holes. Flooding could, and often did, close the golf course anywhere from days to weeks to allow for cleanup. Other issues included a poor irons only practice range, no short game area and a significant safety issue along an adjacent road.

A plan was put into place that essentially kept what was good while improving the areas of the course that were lacking. To mitigate the safety issue as well as create room for a full size driving range, 12 of the holes had to be completely re-routed. The addition of fairway contouring and significant drainage infrastructure will help minimize downtime following flood events allowing the City to increase revenue. In addition, all new features were built to add interest, variety and a traditional flavor.

To compliment the new lighted practice range and short game area, a 5 hole short course was added for the City’s use in providing an option for growing the game or just a more fun and convenient way to experience the game of golf. The holes are 35 to 70 yards in length.

The golf course opened in November 2011.
