Short Course
Overview
The Courses at Watter’s Creek, recently renamed, has all 33 holes open as of September 2013. The improved routing and playability of The Traditions 18 hole course has been well received, along with the 9 hole Players Course and 6 hole Futures Course. The lighted practice area and Futures Course compliments the large short game area, which was recently voted the Best Practice Facility in the DFW Metroplex. The facility was designed to grow the game providing a golf experience for everyone.
The golf design was in step with the tendency of that era to create man-made features that were geared towards an immediate and overwhelming impact. The golf design trend in that era was to create man made features producing force carry and target golf. Most of these types of designs were difficult to play and difficult to maintain.
The excellent location was not enough to drive rounds. In addition to the lack of play, the City also needed to address the failing infrastructure, holes 1 and 18 were not visible from the clubhouse, several safety issues, tree canopy overgrowth, silted water features and lack of irrigation water storage. The nine hole course was more difficult to play than the 18 hole and the practice facility was underutilized because of the lack of interesting targets and driving lanes.
The City had a vision to own and operate a facility that was geared toward growing the game by providing a variety of golf play options for people of all ages and skill levels. To that end, the revamped facility will be comprised of an 18 hole championship golf course, a very playable par 30 nine hole course, a six hole short course (holes ranging from 30-85 yards) and a large practice range and short game practice area. A public facility that will grow the game of golf has become a reality for the City of Allen.
